Target currently has over 20
million likes on Facebook and 300,000 followers on Twitter. A company that
large must have an update social media presence. Many fans visit their Facebook
page every day to air grievances, ask questions, and tell about the good
experiences they have had.
Fans of Target’s Facebook page
voice a variety of opinions. Of the 50 post looked at, over half were positive
comments. Most people were stopping by to write that they loved Target or had a
great experience there. Others wrote about their bad service they had experienced
or the poor service they had received on the company’s website while ordering. Another popular topic was the lack of items.
Many people found that items advertised were not available anymore or on
backorder. Also a great number of post were about issues customers had when
trying to return an item. The rest of the comments were either people
complaining about Target’s holiday commercials or their running advertisements
during NickMom. Many mothers are unhappy about the new program running on
NickJunior. They want to boycott Target until they stop supporting the programing.
Target’s Twitter mentions had almost
the opposite post. Of the 15 most recent tweets, most were about going to Target.
Others were talking, positively, about an item purchased at Target. Fans of
Twitter post more positive messages about Target and their products.
Target must be more proactive on
their Facebook page. Many posts went unanswered by the company. However, other people
would comment. It makes the page look like it is run by fans, not by the company.
Many people complained that the responses were too generic and did not offer
enough assistance. Though Target’s Twitter page appears to be excellently run,
there are a few things the company could do to improve. . More retweets from and
interaction with followers could help the company expand its following.
